CD701

The world's first transformable all-electric crossover, transitioning from an SUV to a pickup with interiors resembling home spaces, had an extremely tight timeline for development. Multiple design stages had to be completed within just a few months, posing a significant challenge in delivering high quality design and motion elements under time pressure.

Stating the challenges

Designing the showcar

Designing the showcar

Crafting a prototype HMI was an exciting and challenging process. As part of the CD701 Team, my focus was on designing an interface that was not just functional, but one that would captivate users and engage them in a visually stunning and interactive experience.

The prototype had to capture the essence of innovation while providing an intuitive and seamless user experience, making it a true representation of the future of automotive technology.

The first design

Immersive HMI

To bring the vision to life, I designed a dynamic, interactive UI featuring floating widgets like cubes and rectangles, inspired by isometric 3D gaming.

These elements created a customisable, immersive space where users could adapt the interface to their lifestyle. I prioritised fluid and intuitive interactions, ensuring that even the most complex features felt natural yet engaging for the user.

3D UX

Users could engage directly with floating widgets, zooming and tapping to control car settings, enhancing the overall immersive experience.

A big change of plan

What if the design had to change shortly before the delivery?

Just as we finished putting together the HMI animations for the CD701 prototype and shortly before its shipment to China, the CEO demanded a significant UI revamp to increase the UI dynamism. As a team, we had to find a solution quickly, as the CD701 represented a pivotal shift for the brand and our UX team's visibility within the company.

Crafting the final design

Creating the Widget City

The "Widget City" concept emerged from transforming flat cubes into a rotating tower, turning static UI elements into dynamic, interactive components. This approach brought the interface to life, creating a visually engaging environment where each widget acted as a building block in a digital cityscape.

The concept not only enhanced the CD701’s UI but also became the foundation for the car’s overall branding, influencing its announcement and adding a unique, futuristic touch to the entire experience.

Helping the UX team

Becoming Motion Design Leader

In response to the CEO’s urgent UI overhaul request, I took on a leadership role as Motion Design Leader, guiding the team to deliver high-quality results despite tight deadlines and limited resources.

I led the visualisation team in crafting dynamic driving mode scenes in Unreal Engine, providing creative direction for 3D design and animation. Using my expertise in After Effects and Cinema 4D, I ensured the visuals aligned with the overall vision and elevated the final product.

UX is all around the car

UX is all around the car

Collaboration across teams was essential to the project's success, allowing us to align innovative design with functional practicality. Working closely with the Interior, and Exterior teams, I gained insights into how every detail shaped the car's overall experience.

The UX team collaboration with the CMF team focused on dynamic light animations, transforming the cabin atmosphere with sequences that balanced safety, entertainment, and interaction.
